Falcons' girls taking energy on the road

TMHS play at Houston tonight
TMHS' Jonelle Staveland (14) boxes out while Ashley Young (32) gets a rebound against Ketchikan last weekend.

The Thunder Mountain High School girl’s basketball team is starting a three-game series on the road tonight hoping to pick up with the intensity they left on the floor last weekend in a first-ever home conference win over Ketchikan.

“Everything is going good,” TMHS coach Tanya Nizich said. “We spent the last couple days working on some things we struggled with over the weekend.”

The Falcons have worked on containing themselves under pressure, controlling the ball and controlling passes.

“We just need to have some confidence in our ball handlers,” Nizich said. “And take control on the court.”

The Thunder Mountain girls (3-9, 1-5) open play tonight at 3A Houston, play Friday at Service and Saturday at Bartlett.

“These trips are good because you don’t see these teams during the season,” Nizich said. “It gives you a good look at a new team and not knowing what to expect we just have to play our game. We are just going to play the defense we are comfortable in and know we can switch things up if we need to. We are striving to play the basketball we practice every day and not let any team change that.”

Nizich stated that the team showed up with a lot of energy last weekend and had confident people step up when it was needed most.

“We need to have players that want the ball in clutch situations,” Nizich said. “That ask for the ball and take care of the ball. I feel like our girls are very comfortable now, I was very pleased with their defense. Offensively we are struggling a bit but that will come with time. We understand that the ball needs to be put up in order to come down through the hoop.”

The Falcons are ranked 14th in the state for 4A girl’s teams by one WPI standing.

Bartlett is 11th and Service 19th.

Following are recent state rankings: 1st Wasilla, 2nd Kodiak, 3rd West, 4th Dimond, 5th Colony, 6th Juneau-Douglas, 7th Lathrop, 8th South, 9th Palmer, 10th Ketchikan, 11th Bartlett, 12th Soldotna, 13th West Valley, 14th Thunder Mountain, 15th Chugiak, 16th East, 17th North Pole, 18th Kenai, 19th Service, 20th Eagle River.
