Crimson Bears' girls top Chugiak 52-43

Juneau-Douglas High School senior Gabi Fenumiai notched a double-double on Friday night in the 2013 Lady Lynx Prep Tournament, scoring 21 points and grabbing 15 rebounds as the Crimson Bears topped the Chugiak Mustangs 52-43.

“We played a full press, one-hundred percent for four quarters,” JDHS coach Dee Boster said. “And it showed. It was a pretty physical game.”

Senior Marissa Brakes had one of her best all-around games of the season, scoring 10 points with five steals and four assists and four rebounds.

Junior Kaitlin Fagerstrom had six points (2 RB, 2 AST), junior Kymberlee Kelly four (8 RB, 3 Steals), junior Kayla Balovich three (5 RB), senior Amberli Fitka three (3 ST), sophomore Rachelle Roldan three (2 RB) and senior Emily Winters two (1 RB, 2 AST).

JDHS hit just 17-44 from the free throw line while Chugiak attempted just nine and hit two.

Haley Scott and Madison McAleavey led the Mustangs with 12 apiece, Brandy Bookout had eight, Hannah Russel six, Sammi McMullen and Anna Ingraham two each, and Kenzie Matthis one.

JDHS trailed 15-10 starting the second quarter. Kelly and Brakes hit deep in the second period as seven different players found the basket to take a 26-23 lead into the half. The Crimson Bears defense allowed just five points in the third quarter and started the final stanza up 39-28.

Brakes and Ingraham were selected Players of the Game.

“We played really well,” Boster said. “It was nice to see everyone come out and play physical and get the job done. I am pretty proud of the girls and pretty happy with the way we played and held our own.”

The Crimson Bears play West Anchorage tonight. The Eagles defeated Palmer 55-48.
