Falcons' girls fall at Sitka 45-44

The Thunder Mountain High School girl’s basketball team had four chances to defeat the Sitka Lady Wolves in the final seconds on Friday at Sitka.

The Lady Wolves missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 15 seconds left and Ava Tompkins grabbed the rebound, drove the length of the court, and went to the glass.

Her shot rolled off the rim and Ashley Young got the rebound.

Young’s shot missed and Sarah Morris got the board.

Morris’ put back went astray and Jonelle Staveland got the rebound but her shot missed.

Time expired as the ball went out of bounds.

“Every player you wanted to have the ball, had it,” TMHS coach Tanya Nizich said. “We had four shots and four offensive rebounds and put backs. Every time someone got the rebound I was relieved who it came down to. We just could not get the ball to fall in. It was very frustrating. I commend the kids for changing the game up so drastically and getting us back into it.”

The Falcons only scored two points in the first quarter while Sitka tallied nine. The Lady Wolves led at the half 23-15.

“It was a tough first half to start off,” Nizich said. “We got down real quick and it carried over. We dug ourselves a bit of a whole to get out of.”

A 15-point third quarter pulled the Falcons to within two, 32-30, starting the final quarter. TMHS took the lead twice in the final stanza but missed the last barage of shots to fall 45-44.

“Jonelle and Sarah just took matters into their own hands and lit it up,” Nizich said.

Morris led the Falcons with 21 points, including 11 points in the third quarter that included three makes from beyond the arch.

Staveland added 14 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arch. Noe Maka added four points, Micheala Demmert three and Young two.

TMHS hit 2-2 at the free throw line, Sitka went 10-18.

Megan Reid led the Lady Wolves with 23 points, Sid Riggs had 10, Kalene Koeling six, and Sophia Madry two.
