Juneau Roller Girls to host Yukon

Local girls look to avenge 164-161 loss

The Juneau Roller Girls are staging a rematch of last season’s 164-161 jam-fest loss to the Yukon Rollergirls at Centennial Hall on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

“I’m really looking forward to skating against Yukon’s Wilder Than Her (Katherine Stewart) and jamming against The Fighting Mongoose (Amil Dupois-Rossi),” JRG’s Hot Damn (Jeanne Crochet) said. “Wilder is one of their best blockers, so I think she can’t wait to try to knock me on my butt. I am also looking forward to hanging out with the Yukon skaters as they have the most fun with us and we have the most fun with them.”

Although these teams have only competed against each other once, they’ve seen each other several times in the past 18 months. There were both at Derby Camps in Juneau, Whitehorse, and Anchorage that had skaters from each club in attendance. Last May both teams participated in a double-header in Fairbanks. This upcoming May they’ll both be at the first all Alaska derby tournament.

These two teams really do like each other, but they both really want to win.

April Mayhem (April Rebert) isn’t skating due to an injury, and is bench coaching instead.

When asked whether she was sad about not skating, Mayhem said, “Yes and no. It’s nice to not worry about the physical aspect and just focus on the mental aspect.”

Juneau has improved a lot since last year’s bout, specifically with working together on the track.

“We might not be working on the right goal, but at least now we’re working on the same goal,” Mayhem said. “One of the biggest challenges I see for this bout is that it will be the first time for each team to skate under a new rules system.” The new rules system, which went into effect on January 1, includes a major change in how penalties are assessed.

Said Mayhem, “There is a good chance we’ll be spending a lot of time in the penalty box.”

The JRG roster for the event is (skate name, number, real name): Showstoppa, 32, Sarah Sjostedt; Just Julie, 11, Julie Sanbei; Fatty Dook, #2, Alicia Gillis; Skatie Brite, 22, Katie White; Kaili Woyote, C4, Kaili Jackson; Catapult Kim, 3, Kim Glasow; Peach Clobber, OB1, Olivia Barrow; Jean Claude Hot Damn, 10mg, Jeanne Crochet; Kimbustible, b4u, Kim Champney; T Tripper, 99, Amanda Triplett; Vertabracher, 666, Sabrina Bracher ; Juneau UWantSome, 907, Sarah Arntson; Skara U Knightley, 360, Kara Nelson; Ezra Pound Her, 23, Grace Lumba; Bench Coaches, Wild Bird, 21, Sherri McDonald, and April Mayhem, 420, April Rebert.
