Photo: Historic Evergreen Bowl Swimming Pool

This undated photo shows the swimming pool at the Evergreen Bowl. The pool was dedicated in 1941 and helped with the first rudiments of swimming for many local youth and was a social gathering spot on sunny days. In 1955 the city ran into problems when considering putting in a heating element at Evergreen. With the aid of money from Augustus Brown's will that encouraged the building of a swimming pool for Juneau kids ("anything but wasting it on the foolish location of the present swimming pool" - Brown, Juneau Empire 1955") the process for the current location began. Construction did not commence until 1971. The Augustus Brown Pool will be celebrating 40 years of community swimming on Saturday. Free swims will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Concessions will be available, music will be played, awesome door prizes given, and cake will be cut and eaten. T.
