The Juneau Ski Club took 13 athlete’s to the U-21, U-18, U-16 Alaska state championship race series, Alyeska Cup at Alyeska last week with U-18 Joseph Greenough, and U-16’s Shane Kelly and Quincy Bates qualifying for the Western Region Junior Olympics at Mission Ridge Washington.
Women competing for the cup were Alexandra Eason, Ali Hiley, Bates, and Dunya Hermann.
Men competing for the cup were Grennough, Kit Cummins, and Kelly.
Additional members from the JSC U-14 and U-12 programs also competed, including JSC U-14 athlete’s Ronan Davies, Jake Marnon, London Madrid, and Dorthy Chapman and JSC U-12 athlete’s Tyler Weldon and Sally Tompson.
Coaches stated the competetion was a great race series for them to build confidence and ski with their compition in the state. U-12 U-14 state championship races will be held in Juneau on March 30th and 31st.
Alaska had 45 men and 42 women participate in the race series with a total of 97 athletes.
The races started on Wednesday The 13th with mandatory Super-G Training. A man made jump was added to the venue to enhance the terrain. The run started at the top of the lower bowl went over waterfall and continued to the bottom. The run was leg burning 1minute and 30 seconds.
The Super-G race started on Thursday with six inches of fresh snow on the course. Volunteers and athletes spent the morning prepping the run. The races started in the afternoon.
With Super-G being a one run race Joe Greenough finished 4th for the U-18 age class, Shane Kelly took second and Quincy Bates finished 6th for the U-16s. Ronan Davies placed 7th in the U-14 age class.
All other competing JSC members did not finish the first run.
Dorthy Chapman had the quote of the day “Crash and Burn, Live and Learn.”
The Second run was canceled do to avalanche danger from the upper bowl.
The Race series continued with four more days of racing. Friday and Saturday Slalom, Sunday and Monday Giant Slalom.
For the overall standings in the U-18 age class Joe Greenough took 6th and is attending the Western Region Junior Olympics at Mission Ridge, Washington. Kit Cummins placed 8th and is the first alternate for WRJO. Ali Hiley Placed 8th as well and is also the first alternate for WRJO.
For the overall standings in the U-16 age class Shane Kelly took 5th and Quincy Bates took 6th. They both will be attending WRJO. Dunya Hermann finished 10th in the State for the U-16 age Class.
All Juneau Ski Club athletes performed at this event. Some with bumps and bruises but overall everyone skied to their potential. All the kids will be coming home from a great trip ready to race some more. It is an individual sport but as a coach I am proud of how the Juneau kids stuck together as a team.
