C. B. General wins city league title

23rd year of Masters Basketball Association play comes to end

For the 23rd year in a row the Juneau Masters Basketball league featured some of the most “seasoned” players and competition in the Capital City.

Championship play was completed on March 8 at Glacier Valley Elementary schools gym. The league standings ended with Team Alliance and C.B. General tying with records of 18 wins and 12 losses for the season.

Juneau Old’r Timers posted the third-best record in the league with a 17 win 13 loss mark and Reliable Transfer battled for their eight win and 22 loss season.

Team Alliance earned the first place tournament seeding based on a win-loss record in head-to-head competition with C.B. General.

The leagues “true” double elimination tournament found the same team standings.

Reliable Transfer was sent home for the season by dropping two games, first to C.B. and then Juneau Old’r Timers.

The Juneau Old’r timer had a win over Reliable Transfer and loses from C.B. and Alliance. In the semi final and final, both played on March 8th, Alliance won over C.B. General by 15 points in what was a close game until the last 10 minutes. Alliance used mostly 5 of 8 players to earn that win while C.B. used all 11 of their players. For the championship, the game was close for the first half, but C.B., still using all 11 of their players won as Alliance used mainly 6 of their now 9 players.

Since the MBA league’s inception, the one constant among the various venues played in and team rosters has been current Commissioner of the MBA, Malcolm Menzies.

Representatives from the various teams, Juneau basketball fans, and the Juneau Empire Sports department wish to say “thank you” to mister Menzies for his dedication in keeping the league together.

We can hardly wait until next season.
