Mercer leads Juneau Alliance over Yakutat Masters

Juneau Alliance's Jack Vogt (13) and Sean Joslin (6) battle with Yakutat's Greg Indreland during master's bracket play on Sunday.

Juneau Alliance rode their 22-19 first half advantage, and the inside work of Ed Mercer, to a 56-43 Masters Bracket win during the 67th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament’s opening day at the JDHS gymnasium.

Juneau Alliance won the local city league Masters Division regular season and played in the season’s championship game (losing to C.B. Green) and continued right where they left off two weeks ago as a battling inside team with some guard speed.

Mercer tallied 14 of his team-high 17 points in the second half. Jack Vogt added 12 points for Juneau, Sean Joslin 11, Frank Arabaca nine, Doug Drazkowski five and Leon Aceveda two.

Yakutat got a game-high 18 points from Gary Klushkan, Greg Indreland added eight, John Jensen six, John Nichols five, Troy Mutz four, and Sam Demmert two.

Juneau hit 9-19 at the charity stripe and Yakutat went 6-11.

Juneau Alliance advances to play last year’s Masters champions Kake at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Yakutat plays in the losers bracket at 9 p.m. Wednesday against the loser of Tuesday’s Klukwan and Hoonah winner’s bracket game (2 p.m.).
