Klukwan hit early and often from outside the arc Sunday night, using the 3-ball to cruise to a 79-53 victory against Angoon in ‘C’ bracket action at the Gold Medal Basketball Tournament.
David Buss got things going quickly for Klukwan, dropping two 3s and eight points total on Angoon in the game’s first 4:04.
“They had a zone that just wasn’t covering those shots,” Buss said.”
After a timeout, Angoon stretched its defense to cover Buss outside the arc, but that simply allowed Jason Shull to take advantage of new gaps in the Angoon perimeter. Shull nailed a 3 and laid in a basket on a breakaway to push Klukwan’s edge to 23-16 with 10:56 remaining in the first half.
Klukwan’s edge would swell to 17 by halftime, and an 11-0 run in the second half stretched that lead even further, to 68-42 with 7:48 left in the game. Shull knocked down two 3s and scored eight total points during Klukwan’s game-sealing run.
Buss powered Klukwan to a 40-23 halftime edge by hitting four 3s during the first frame. He finished the half with 16 points.
Buss led all scorers with 22 points, which includes six 3-point makes. Stuart DeWitt added 16 for Klukwan, while Shull finished with 15. Of Klukwan’s 30 field goals, half came from beyond the 3-point line.
Frank Willis led Angoon with 16 points, as Kevin Mitchell scored 13.
Klukwan advances to play Kake at 6 p.m. tonight.
“Kake’s always tough, and they got to sit and watch us, so it will be a tough game,” Buss said.
Angoon falls into the losers’ bracket and will take on Hydaburg, a team that dropped an 89-81 decision to Hoonah Sunday afternoon. That losers’ bracket game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. Wednesday tip.
