Hydaburg eliminates Metlakatla 93-80 from B bracket

Hydaburg's Jeb Phillips, left, defends Metlakatla's Willie Hayward (20) during Gold Medal action on Wednesday night. Hydaburg eliminated Metlakatla 93-80, story on page B3.

It is hard to imagine there is a gymnasium where Hydaburg’s Vinnie Edenshaw has hit more long-range bombs than the Juneau-Douglas High School gymnasium he played in Wednesday night.

Edenshaw dumped in 33 points, including eight triples from four feet past the arch, as Hydaburg clashed and battled to a 93-80 win over powerhouse Metlakatla during a Gold Medal B bracket elimination game.

“I have been hotter,” Edenshaw said. “I just had to take my time, square my body up more and find my rhythm.”

Thanks to his teammates Edenshaw had plenty of time.

The defensive pressure of Hydaburg on Metlakatla’s all-world tandem of Willie Hayward and Chris Bryant made live difficult for the run-and-gun Merchants.

Bryant tallied just five points in the first half as Hydaburg’s Jeb Phillips hounded him from end-to-end. Phillips also pulled down 10 rebounds as he crashed the boards against the taller and more physical Metlakatla team.

Hydaburg went on a 13-4 run to open the game and held a 28-19 lead at the 6:44 mark of the first half.

Metlakatla’s Tom Booth carried the load inside, scoring 8 points in the first half, and Hayward hit for 11 in that stanza.

A tip rebound by Phillips gave Hydaburg a 36-29 lead with seconds remaining before the break as Hayward scored at the buzzer.

Metlakatla pulled within two points at the 18-minute mark of the second half as Bryant began to catch fire. Hydaburg countered with Phillips playing at the free throw line and a perimeter scoring punch of Vinny, Deven and Darren Edenshaw.

Hydaburg took a 67-55 lead and never let Metlakatla get a run. The Merchants closed to nine, 70-61 with 7:46 remaining but Darren Edenshaw hit two triples in a row and Vinny a double to take momentum into the 93-80 win.

V. Edenshaw led with 33 points, Darren Edenshaw 20, Devin Edenshaw 15, Eric Hamilton nine, Jeb Phillips eight, Tyler Bell six, and Greg Frisby two.

Hydaburg went 20-26 at the free throw line, Metlakatla was 6-12.

Bryant led the Merchants with 22, Hayward 18, Jason Enright 14, Tom Booth Jr. 12, Zachary Mills eight, Clayton Milton four, and Mike Henderson two.

Hydaburg will play Wrangell in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. today.
