A play late in the first half proved a perfect illustration of Angoon’s speed and quickness, and Haines’ inability to stop it.
As Angoon’s Clayton Edwin streaked towards center court wit the ball, Ben Egolf reached for a steal. Edwin deftly moved out of the way, Egolf stumbled and fell into his teammate Kevin Thompson, and both fell on the floor in a heap.
Edwin and his Angoon squad would leave Haines behind in their wakes often on Thursday night inside the Juneau-Douglas High School gym, as they cruised to a 98-64 rout of Haines in a ‘B’ bracket semifinal of the Gold Medal Basketball Tournament on Thursday night at Juneau-Douglas High School.
Angoon went on a 9-0 run early in the first half to take a 16-7 lead, and would never look back. Ozelle Jamestown would score 6 of his 18 points during that stretch with three lay-ups. Two of those close-range kissers came courtesy of length-of-the-court passes, while Jamestown helped himself to a midcourt steal for the third.
Edwin then turned the game into his personal basketball clinic, scoring 26 of his game-high 32 points in the first half, pushing Angoon to a commanding 72-31 edge at the break. He knocked down five 3s in the opening frame, and finished the game with seven hits from beyond the arc.
The only question remaining during a second half timed with a continuous clock was if Angoon would hit the scoreboard’s century mark. They did not, despite several attempts late in the game to score those elusive two points.
Curtis Lane scored 17 points and Jordan Jamestown added 14 for Angoon. Egolf led Haines with 16 points, and teammate Dve Berry chipped in 10.
Angoon advances to Saturday’s 8 p.m. ‘B’ bracket championship game. Haines will play Hydaburg in an 8:30 p.m. elimination game Friday, with the winner meeting Angoon for the title.
