Hydaburg B runs Wrangell out of Gold Medal 67-48

On paper it looked like one of the best match ups of the 67th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament as Hydaburg and Wrangell faced off in a Thursday afternoon elimination game that saw Hydaburg get the 67-48 win and Wrangell seats to watch the remainder of the tournament.

The paper was unkind for the Stikine River boys as the Thunderbirds shots would not go down as often as they did in Wrangell’s first games of the tournament, while Hydaburg continued to ride the hot hands of the Edenshaw lads.

Hydaburg opened the game with a 7-0 run, including a Darren Edenshaw dunk down the lane, until Kevin Young scored at the 15:55 mark, then two straight baskets by Hydaburg’s Devin Edenshaw, one from Tyler Bell, and a triple by Edenshaw after a steal forced a Wrangell time out.

The Thunderbirds came out of the rest with baskets by Keith Young, Cody Angerman and Ryan Hall to close within 15-9.

The two teams would keep that margin, give or take a point, into the break with Hydaburg up 37-28.

A flurry of fouls by Wrangell and a flurry of scores by Hydaburg’s Darren Edenshaw pushed the opening lead to 45-28. The margin became 20 points, 55-35 at the 10:48 mark and Hydaburg spread the court the remainder of the game for the 67-48 win.

Hydaburg was led by Devin Edenshaw’s 20 points, Darren Edenshaw added 18, Vinny Edenshaw 12, Jeb Phillips six and nine rebounds, Tyler Bell and Eric Hamilton five apiece, and Tony Edenshaw one.

Wrangell’s Cody Angerman was the only Thunderbird to hit for double figures with 10 points, Ryan Howell added nine, Graham Gablehouse eight, Keith Young six, Kevin Young and Brad Angerman five apiece, Tony Harding three, and Mitch Mork two.

Wrangell hit 7-12 at the charity stripe while Hydaburg went 16-22.

Hydaburg will play another elimination game tonight at 8:30 p.m. against the Haines, a 98-64 loser to Angoon in the semifinals Thursday.
