Falcons tour the State Capitol building

Thunder Mountain High School baseball players Tim Christensen, Hary Elizarde, Patrick Minsch and Taylor Peterson, along with student manager Ashley Luck and coaches Todd Luck and Bill McCauley combined a team raffle ticket sales opportunity with a civics lesson field trip to the State Legislature in the State Capitol building on Saturday.

The building was full of staff while legislators wrestled with details of the Operating and Capital Project budget bills as they were nearing the end of session.

Highlights of the field trip include:

A tour in the House Chambers and a fun presentation by House Page staff discussing how session works, and, what it was like to work for the House as a Page during the legislative session. Pages are typically folks recently out of high school.

A visit to the office of Representative Bill Stolze, Co-Chair of the busy House Finance Committee. Rep. Stolze was hospitable and shared his collection of baseball memorabilia, including a baseball signed by the great Hank Aaron, among many other items. The chairman related his love of baseball and discussed his childhood playing days. The twenty minutes of precious time was inspiring and the Falcons appreciated the impromptu visit.

The Falcons sold eight tickets while visiting the House Chief Clerk’s office. This office was especially welcoming. The Senate Secretary’s office was unavailable because of an impending floor session.

Even though folks were busy, the Thunder Mountain HS students were welcomed and treated hospitably by all legislative staff. One staffer bought five tickets. A couple of folks simply donated money.

Coach McCauley knows the value of legislature, having worked 17 years for the Legislative Affairs Agency, 11 years as Help Desk Supervisor and 6 years as Data Processing Manager. Some of the current legislators were staffers back in McCauley’s day. Quite a few permanent staff are still there.

The TMHS Falcons leave Thursday to play Sitka and North Pole at Sitka.
