TMHS' Zach Dindinger (3) wins a ball from Chugiak's Lukas Brown (16) and Adam Groendyke (6) during the Falcons' 1-0 loss to the Mustangs on Saturday at TMHS Field.

The Thunder Mountain High School boy’s soccer team played 79:50 seconds of even pitch work against the visiting Chugiak Mustangs on Saturday at Falcons’ Field; unfortunately for 10 seconds the visitors got the upper hand, scoring on a last second corner kick that found a head and then the back of the net.

“It is always tough to lose on the last second,” TMHS coach Sam Greely said. “I think these guys picked up some things and they know what they need to work on.”

Neither team could get an upper hand during play as midfield action ruled the day.

Chugiak had five shots on goal in the first half and the Falcons two; both teams had four opportunities in the second half.

The Falcons missed some early passes but used halftime to talk about connecting on through balls.

“Our strength was when we linked together,” Greely said. “It didn’t matter if we were moving forward or backward, we looked a lot sharper on our second runs on the field. They were timed well. As soon as it gets off balance or out of rhythm it is hard to get back on.”

Jasper Soriano stopped five shots on goal in the first half for the Falcons and Matt Seymour four in the second. Brandon Monges was key at the forward position in giving the Falcons a dangerous option that kept the Mustangs from moving their back defenders into dangerous mid attack positions.

Chugiak’s Daniel Ogden sent a corner kick to the Falcons’ goalmouth that went just over Seymour’s hand as he leapt to knock it away, and the Mustang’s Nicolas Macalino headed the ball in with just seconds remaining in the match.

The Falcons’ boys and girls will host Ketchikan on Tuesday and Wednesday at TMHS. Game times both nights are girls at 5:15 p.m. and boys at 7 p.m. The TMHS boys will also play Lathrop on Thursday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m.).
