Heart of Hospice Fun Run Results

Over 80 athletes competed in Saturday’s 8th Annual Heart of Hospice Fun Run 5K and 1-mile run or walk along the Twin Lakes Trail.

Fastest male runner was Juneau’s John Nagel who averaged six minutes and 31 seconds over the 5K course, finishing with a time of 20:17. Nagel had a 35-second advantage over runner-up Steve Crupi of Anchorage. Local youth runner Connor Norman, fresh off his Nordic DEVO ski season, ran to a third overall finish of 21:05.

The fastest female was Juneau’s Jane Boer who averaged 7:15 per mile on her way to an overall fourth-place finish of 22:46 in the 5K. Lori Crupi was second female with a 24:46, good for 12th-place overall.

The one-mile did not have a true time as runners missed the turn around point and had a bit more of a course to challenge. Top male finisher was Juneau’s Malachi Peimann with a 10:26, just six seconds faster than the second overall finisher, and fastest female, McLain Sidmore of Juneau who ran a 10:32. The third overall time also went to a Juneau running woman as Alee Sowell hit a 10:49. Douglas’ Elijah Jarrett got the men back in the mix with a 10:54 fourth-place finish, nipping Juneau’s Raiya McCutcheon by one second.

According to race director Lori Yorba the fastest male and female runners receive the Dr. Henry Akiyama Award, sponsored by Virginia Mason Medical Center. The award honors the memory of Dr. Akiyama for all the medical service he provided to the Juneau community. Nagel and Boer receive an award certificate and their name and time will be placed on the plaque, which will be hung in the Hospice & Home Care of Juneau offices. The Heart of Hospice Fun Run is a fundraiser for Hospice & Home Care of Juneau. Hospice provides humane and compassionate care via medical services, emotional supports and spiritual resources for people in the last phases of an incurable disease or serious illness so they may live as fully and comfortably as possible. Hospice also helps family members manage the practical details and the emotional challenges of caring for a dying loved one.
