Falcons' boys fall 2-1 to visiting Lathrop Malemutes

The Thunder Mountain High School boy’s soccer team was at a disadvantage before the start of Thursday’s home match against the Lathrop Malemutes.


Down nine players due to the Region V Music Festival in Juneau and the seasonal cold bug, the Falcons rallied around a spirited bench to battle the side from Fairbanks.

Lathrop struck first as the Malemutes’ Conner Matheny put a shot in at the 24-minute mark of the first half and teammate Nathan Barnett was yellow-carded for taunting.

Playing without Stephan Ringle, Rafael Sales, Jasper Soriano, Zach Dindinger, Patrick Escorrido, and Dylan Williams, the Falcons overcame the loss of three starting backs and a keeper to even the

TMHS’ Mohammed Qabani lined a corner kick to the Lathrop front that Brandon Monges blasted it in to tie the score with two minutes remaining in the half.

Lathrop dominated ball possession and had eight more shots on goal than did the Falcons.

The key shot from the Malemutes was a bicycle kick by Konatantin Balthes eight minutes into the second half that gave the visitors the 2-1 margin.

The Falcons defended off four more shots on goal down the stretch but could not get a solid counter attack on the Malemutes goal.
