Last weekend’s weather was unpleasant on the ball parks around town, forcing the cancellation of games and moving the first meeting of the season between the Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears and the Thunder Mountain Falcons to Melvin Park, where they were rained out anyway.

That game will be made up tonight at 7 p.m. on the Adair Kennedy diamond. JV action will lead in at 4 p.m.

Both clubs did get in some game time over the weekend with JDHS topping Ketchikan 9-3 in a game called after five innings on Friday as Jeffrey Pusich provided the heat on the windy and soggy mound; and TMHS losing to Kayhi 8-4 earlier in the day.

Pusich won his second game (with no losses) of the season, allowing just one earned run according to statistics from JDHS assistant coach Frank Barthel. Pusich gave up seven hits and walked four in the torrential rains. The Crimson Bears had six hits and eight walks while scoring two runs in the first, 1 in the second, 2 in the third, and 4 in the fourth. Christian Gould, Kurt Vandor and Tal Norvell each went 1-2 with 1 RBI apiece and Grant Ainsworth and Kyle Gould both went 1-3 with 1 RBI.

One night after falling to last season’s state runner-up, the Falcons pulled an ace out of their on-deck circle and stymied the potent Kayhi offense 2-0 on Saturday.

The ace was senior hurler Dylan Johnson, who threw a complete game, three-hit work of art on a windy day that, of course, finished in the rain.

The Falcons had a chance to score in the second inning when Jackson Pavitt singled, stole second and was advanced to third on a sacrifice by a freshman Jake Tanner but was stranded there.

In the third Collin Ludeman was hit by a pitch, stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice was doubled across the plate by RJ Markovich. RJ Markovich would score on a single by Jared Markovich.

Kayhi couldn’t crack the heat from Johnson and when they did the Falcons got big plays from third baseman Tanner, shortstop J. Markovich and left fielder Ludeman.

Tonight’s game will feature two teams with solid and tested defenses on the left side, quality pivot play at second and sure-gloves at first base.

The senior Gould twins, Christian at third and Kyle at second, and senior Tal Norvell at short make it difficult for teams to put a single past the Crimson Bears and the Falcons counter with their own capable hot corner man in freshman Jake Tanner.

Pusich or Tanner Petrie could take the mound tonight and either will be a tough matchup; while the Falcons can off-set that duo with senior Dylan Johnson or junior Gus Swanton with senior Patrick Millay controlling their pitches behind the plate.

Senior leadoff man Jackson Lehnhart should be on the field (also wears the JDHS soccer jersey) along with classmates Tod Baseden and Kurt Vandor for some plate punch. TMHS has been getting solid connections from Millay, the Markovich boys, Tanner, Pavitt, Matt Cunningham and Tim Christensen.

One thing for certain, with the weatherman calling for mostly sunny and mild (which translates to occasional rains), we are going to have a heck of a ball game tonight.
