Lynn Canal Running Camp counselor Tristan Knutson-Lombardo leads campers on an adventure run during last summers camp. Adult mentors are still needed and welcome for this year's camp.

The Lynn Canal Running Camp is looking for a few more good men, and women, to mentor the youth athletes attending the annual “sole searching” gathering beginning Sunday, June 23.

“This is our biggest camp ever,” counselor Merry Ellefson said. “It is still just the right size to stay on a good one-on-one and have reflections around the fire and let the kids get to know each other. And we just won’t be able to fit any more yoga mats inside the main lodge, so the size is perfect.”

The overnight camp is a holistic camp that merges adventure runs with workshops on nutrition, yoga, first aid, zumba, sport psychology, food-making, and unique Olympic games.

Current instructors include Ellefson and Tristan Knutson-Lombardo (counselors, running instructors), Steve Wolf (Yoga), Corey Pavitt (Core strengthening), former JDHS and current UAA runner Jesse Miller (5K race training), Alison Conney (Zumba), Houston Laws (First Aid), Scott May (Sports Psychology), and Becca Braun, who will talk to the campers about the spirit of the runner the camp is dedicated to, John Caouette.

Another added attraction will be the attendance of Ultra-runner Geoff Roes who will watch with the campers, and comment, on the movie “Unbreakable.” The film was shot in 2010 when four of the greatest undefeated mountain runners on earth toed the starting line at the Western States 100-mile endurance run, the oldest and most prestigious 100-mile foot race in the world. The four were: Roes, undefeated at the 100-mile distance, an organic chef from Juneau, Alaska. Hal Koerner, two-time defending Western States champion, and running store entrepreneur from Ashland, Oregon. Anton Krupicka, undefeated in every ultra marathon he has ever started, a graduate student living in Boulder, Colorado. Kilian Jornet, the young mountain runner and two-time Ultra-trail du Mont-Blanc champion, from Spain.

“That should be a really entertaining and exciting time,” Ellefson said.

The Lynn Canal Running Camp has increased in attendance to 33 runners this year. The athletes are of all abilities and are from both Juneau high schools, Ketchikan and Skagway. Counselors at the camp include life-long runners David Francis, Leah Francis, Hillary Young, Nathan Ord, Greg Frank, Knutson-Lombardo and Ellefson.

“And we cannot forget Linda Mancuso,” Ellefson said. “She is our head cook and chef and that is one of the biggest projects out at the camp.”

More adults are needed to help with transport and with the runs. The more adults the better, the safer, and the more fun.

One of the camp goals it to provide more adult and peer support and to connect with the teens as the local running community grows.

All transport activity will begin at the Eagle River Methodist camp. Please call Merry Ellefson at 500-8112 if you can help and how much room is available in your vehicle.

The following days are needing support:

Tuesday, June 25, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Transport to track for Predict A Mile and then Heinselman hike/jog or Under Thunder to East Glacier.

Thursday, June 27, Noon-4:15 p.m., Transport to Eaglecrest Ridge or Mt Roberts for Adventure Run (May move to Wednesday, weather dependent).

Friday, June 28, 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Montana Creek Trail to Windfall.
