Juneau’s Midnight Suns Girls 12U fastpitch softball team just finished their annual trip “outside” Alaska, competing in games in Washington and Oregon. The team is comprised of what will be the Gastineau Channel Little League’s major Division All-Star team that begins play in Anchorage, July 11-16.

The Midnight Suns finished fourth in the June 15th-16th tournament in Chehalis, WA. The team uses this tourney as their “State Warmup” contests. Some of the best teams in the state of Washington were competition there.

“We played a little tight but battled the teams to very close games,” manager Scott Balovich said.

The girls also attended the University of Washington Husky Softball Camp during the week between their two tournaments and received a tremendous amount of instruction which they applied very well.

The second tournament ran from July 23rd-24th in Newberg, OR and saw the Midnight Suns come together as a team and play tremendous softball.

“Defensively they shined,” Balovich said. “They were very stingy while pounding the ball and putting up big scores.”

The Midnight Suns 12U squad went undefeated in Oregon, winning all five games and taking the tournament title.

According to Balovich the championship game was s a culmination of the team’s best work. as they played flawless defense and showed tremendous discipline at the plate with a 10-1 win. Leah Spargo pitched the championship game and dominated with a tremendous fastball and extremely effective off speed pitches.

“Even though we were playing on a “slow pitch field” with 325’ fences, Miranda Markovich, Megan Dallas and Peyton harp hit several balls that would have easily cleared our home town Melvin park wall,” Balovich said.

The 12U Midnights Suns are Mia Loree, Morgan Balovich, Rachel Macauley, Maxie Saceda-Hurt, Skylar Hickok, Abby Meiners, Megan Dallas, Sophia Schauwecker, Maranda Markovich, Peyton Harp, Leah Spargo, and Kyra Jenkins. Coaches are John Schauwecker, Brittany Fenumiai. This team is virtually intact for the GCLL All-Star representatives with the addition of Nina Fenumiai who replaces Schauwecker.
