Over 30 athletes attended the 2013 Lynn Canal Running Camp last week.
Held at Eagle River Methodist Camp the annual event included runners of all abilities from Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway involved in workshops and super adventures with a lot of community support.
“It was pretty special to get most of the group across Montana Creek Trail to Windfall Lake, meet up with the others there and swim in the lake under the sun,” Camp director Merry Ellefson said.
Ellefson and co-director Tristan Knutson Lombardo were joined by counselors Leah and David Francis, Hilary Young, Nathan Ord, Hunter Brown, Anne Bartholomew, and Greg Frank, head cook Linda Mancuso, and 20 community members who joined to help in the kitchen and serve as mentors on the trails.
The camp merges daily workshops with runs on Juneau’s amazing trail system, including Thunder Mountain, Dan Mohler, Herbert Glacier, Boy Scout Beach, the 13-mile Montana Creek/Windfall trail and a 3K time trial. Workshops were held by local experts and included yoga, core training, sport psychology, nutrition, first aid, zumba, and 5K training. Another highlight was the nightly “Olympics Games,” which featured an elimination Quidditch match. The camp is designed integrate information about the mind and body, encouraging runners to raise their personal performance bars as well as develop adult and peer support systems.
