The Gastineau Channel Little League’s Junior Division All-Stars are about to begin District Tournament play at Sitka and the team looks to be one that can continue the long tradition of success on the diamonds.
“This year’s all-Star team is young and very scrappy,” Juniors manager Joe Tompkins said. “For the most part they are all hard workers and a great group of boys.”
Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka will play each other twice with the top two teams moving on to a double-elimination championship format.
Juneau opens against Sitka on July 15, after the Wolves have played Ketchikan. Juneau plays Ketchikan July 16 and the “first city” boys follow with a game against Sitka. Juneau gets a turn at the double-header treatment on July 17, playing Ketchikan and then Sitka.
The winner of the District Tournament stays in Sitka for the State Tournament on July 23-28. The winner of State travels to the Regionals in Vancouver, Washington (July 31-August 7). The last step for winners is the World Series in Bangor, Maine (August 11-17).
“They have set big goals and are working hard to attain them,” Tompkins said of the Juneau team. “Most of them have been here before, just at the Majors Division level.”
