Historic 1963 JDHS state basketball champions

The 1963 state basketball champions, the Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears. Front row, left-to-right: Mike Triplette, Sasha Soboleff, Pat Gullufsen, John Bertholl, and Doc Eide. Standing, l-r: John Stringer, Jan Dabney, Jeff Prather, coach John Borbridge, Dick Olsen, and Wayne Matheny. Seniors were Matheny, Soboleff and Dabney and the rest were juniors. According to Doc Eide this was a few years after the Juneau and Douglas school districts consolidated and a rivalry still remained. At the conclusion of the championship game over Fairbanks at Eielson AFB, Mike Pusich (owner of Mike's Place in Douglas) announced in his restaurant that "Douglas had just won the state championship."
