The Gastineau Channel Little League Juniors are now the favorites heading into today’s opening game of the best-of-three District Championship Series in Sitka.
Juneau avenged an earlier tournament loss to Ketchikan, winning 7-6 in the 10th inning on a walk-off single by Antonio DeAsis, and added their second win over Sitka behind five runs in the seventh inning.
Juneau trailed 5-0 against Ketchikan heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Michael Cesar (1-5, 1 RS) singled, Erik Kelly (1-4, 1 RS, 1 BB) singled and Corbin Neville (1-2, 1 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB) walked to load the bases. Cesar scored on a steal of home plate.
Juneau tied the score in the sixth inning as Trevar Fiscus (0-3, 1 RS, 1 BB) walked and scored on a passed ball. Kelly walked and Sammy McKnight (2-3, 2 RS, 1 BB) was hit by a pitch. Neville singled scoring Kelly and Jacob Dale (1-3, 1 RBI) sacrificed in McKnight. Neville would steal home for a 5-5 game.
Ketchikan took the lead in the top of the 10th inning and with the first two batters for Juneau going down it looked like a loss would ensue. Instead McKnight walked, Neville was hit by a pitch and Dale singled to load the bases. Donavin McCurley (0-4, 1 RBI) was hit by a pitch to score McKnight. DeAsis singled in the game winner, scoring Neville.
Against Sitka, a five-run seventh inning powered Juneau to the win.
DeAsis doubled and scored on a passed ball for the 7-6 lead. Fiscus tripled and Cesar walked. Fiscus stole home to score. Kelly singled in Cesar. Mallinger walked. Schenker singled to score Kelly and Mallinger scored on the action. Leading 11-6, Neville came on to finish out the game on the mound.
Kelly threw five innings (96-59, 8 K, 4 BB, 5 R, 7 H), Schenker relieved (22-15, 2 K, 1 R, 2 H) and Neville closed (18-10, 1 K, 1 BB, 2 H).
