The Ben Blackgoat Memorial race record will never fall. It is timeless. While the minutes, miles and finishes are tallied, it is the participation and joy of running that are counted.

University of Alaska Anchorage runner and Juneau-Douglas alum (2012) Jesse Miller has that joy, and he also finished with the fastest time for the 7-mile (11.27 KM) portion of the 17th annual race, finishing in 46 minutes and 28 seconds.

“It is really sad that he (Blackgoat) died doing the sport that he loved,” Miller said. “I think there is no better way to honor someone than by doing the thing that they loved also. Not only do I run the race for myself but I run it for the family and to show everyone that we do what we love even in the face of tragedy.”

Drew Yoder won the 4-mile (6.44 KM) in 29:48 and Caitlin Greenup topped the 2-mile (3.22 KM) field with a 16:17.

Miller was just ahead of Dewey Peacock, a classmate of Ben Blackgoat, who the race is held for each year.

Blackgoat was a JDHS runner who had a goal of running in the Olympics. He died in a training accident on Perseverance Trail on Nov. 27, 1996. The memorial race is along one of his favorite training runs. A bench with a memorial plaque sits midway on the course, at a scenic vista.

“He was the most positive person,” Peacock said of Blackgoat. “I ran with him a lot in the off-season. He was a really fun guy and he had a hard work ethic. I recently found an old team photo of us all and you can see him on one end making this goofy face. I think about him a lot when I run.”

Blackgoat and his mother, Christine, moved to Juneau from Palmer before school started for Blackgoat’s junior year. The 16-year-old had helped Colony High School win the state cross-country championship as a sophomore. As a junior he was undefeated in Southeast cross-country meets, winning the Region V Championship and finishing 12th at the state meet. The day before Thanksgiving, Blackgoat was making one of his many training runs up Perseverance Trail, preparing for his senior year as a Crimson Bears runner, when he slipped on a patch of ice and fell 300 feet to his death.

The impact of his passing was felt statewide. Blackgoat was a Catholic summer camp instructor in Soldotna, and parents of his campers brought their children to his funeral, one of two services held.

Former teammates have said Blackgoat was the most encouraging person they had ever met and that it was important to him to cheer for everyone. Blackgoat loved to run so much he would spend school days tracking down other people to go running on Mount Roberts, East Glacier or Perseverance.

Over the years the stories of how much Blackgoat has meant to those who met him have helped shaped the lives of runners who will never meet him.

A past news report recalled the high school meet in Wrangell where Blackgoat stopped to help an elderly man mow his lawn after the race. In one contest he ran back in a race to finish with one of his developmentally challenged family members, saying, “We are teammates. We run and finish together.”

Christine Blackgoat was a nurse and the family traveled a lot. Blackgoat’s father, Danny, was a runner in Arizona and Ben began that path at age 7. Blackgoat loved soccer, track and cross-country. Older brother Brandon ran until Ben, then 13, beat him and every other runner at the Midnight Solstice Run in Anchorage.

“My son was an unusual kid,” Christine Blackgoat said in an earlier interview. “He loved people and life and he ran 365 days a year.”

The funds collected from each year’s race go towards the Ben Blackgoat Memorial Scholarship.

“It was nice to put a good effort in,” Miller said after his finish in Saturday’s race. “All four years of high school Perseverance was the one trail that I loved the most, so it was really nice to go back up there, even after school.”
