Juneau’s Gastineau Channel Little League Juniors baseball All-Stars lost 6-3 to Abbott-O-Rabbit in the opening game of the best-of-five State Championship series on Tuesday in Sitka.
Abbott-O-Rabbit scored three runs in the first inning and never surrendered the lead despite Juneau scoring three runs on just two hits in the game.
Juneau put one run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning as leadoff batter Antonio DeAsis (0-3, 1 RS) was hit by a pitch. With Donavin McCurley (0-2) providing havoc at the plate, DeAsis advanced to third on two passed balls by the AOR pitcher and stole home to score.
Trevor Fiscus (1-1, 1 BB) walked and was caught stealing and Quin Gist (0-1, 1 BB) walked but was stranded on base.
Juneau would strand Sammy McKnight (1-3) on base in the second inning and Fiscus in the third. AOR scored a run in the third and another in the fourth.
Juneau scored twice in the bottom of the fourth as Erik Kelly (0-3, 1 RS) reached on an error and Michael Cesar (0-2, 1 RS, 1 BB) walked. Kelly would score on an error by the catcher. Christian Schenker (0-0, 1 RBI, 1 BB) walked and McKnight advanced Cesar to third but was doubled out with courtesy runner Corbin Neville (0-1) at second. Jacob Dale (0-1) reached on an error and Cesar scored during the action.
AOR added a final run in the sixth and did not allow Juneau batters to reach base in their final six plate appearances. Luke Mallinger (0-1), Steven Cole (0-0), and Elliot Gifford (0-1) had appearances.
Fiscus went 5.1 innings on the mound, throwing 97 pitches with 54 strikes, striking out one batter, walking three, and allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits. Dale relieved for 1.2 innings (33-16, 3 BB, 1 H).
AOR’s Johnson threw three innings (4 K, 4 BB, 2 H, 3 R), Costello three (3 K), and Maldonado one (1 K).
The two teams play again today at 6 p.m. at Sitka.
