GCLL Junior All-Stars down two games against Abbott-O-Rabbit

State Championship hopes on the line today after 7-0 loss

Those wily old rabbits are causing havoc for the Juneau Gastineau Channel Junior Little League All-Stars at the State Tournament in Sitka.

For the second night in a row Juneau has been shut down at the plate by the Anchorage club, losing 7-0 on Wednesday as the GCLL could earn just one hit, and falling into a two-loss hole heading into tonight’s game.

“We have to win one to continue,” Juneau manager Joe Tompkins said. “We have to win every game now or we get swept.”

Juneau fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first and never recovered.

“They are a pretty good team,” Tompkins said. “Our boys got down a couple of runs and they just shut down. They have never done this before. They just have to believe in themselves, the coaches are staying positive.”

Erik Kelly started on the mound and settled down after the first inning, throwing into the fifth with 100 pitches and 60 strikes, one strikeout, three walks, and six runs (5 earned) on six hits.

“Erik really game back,” Tompkins said. “He maxed his pitches out and did really well.”

Donavin McCurley relieved for 1.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits.

Juneau bats only collected one hit on the night. Michael Cesar (1-1, 2 BB) hit a double in the seventh inning. McCurley (0-2, 1 BB) and Sammy McKnight (0-1, hit by a pitch) were the only other players to reach base.

Abbot-O-Rabbit’s J. Homza threw a complete game (83-48, 5 K, 3 BB, 1 H).

“Donavin has such a big heart,” Tompkins said. “Unfortunately you can’t put him at all positions. He is only 13 and he is not afraid. All of our boys have heart. The hard hits the boys did get were caught, they were right to the guys. Then we got nervous and couldn’t get our small game going.”

The teams play tonight at 6 p.m. at Sitka. Juneau lost on Tuesday 6-3.
