Juneau’s Gastineau Channel Little League Junior Softball All-Stars jumped on Anchorage’s Abbott-O-Rabbit in game one of their best-of-five State Championship series, winning 8-2 behind the home runs of Makayla Harp and Jordan Harris and taking momentum into today’s rematch.
Erica Maiquis started on the mound and went four innings (50 pitches, 37 strikes, 2 strikeouts, 1 walk, 1 run, 2 hits) and Quincy Bates relieved for three innings (38-33, 5 K, 1 R, 3 H).
Harris (1-4, 1 HR) scored three times and had one run batted in, Bates (2-4, 1 run scored) and Harp (3-4, 1 RS, 1 HR) had 2 RBI apiece to lead the hitting. Alondra Echiverri (1-3, 1 RBI, 1 RS), Maiquis (0-2, 1 RBI, 1 RS, 1 BB), Haleigh DiCarlo (0-1, 1 RBI), Sami Good (1-2, 1 BB), Sophie Hultberg (1-4, 1 RS), Maddie Johnson (1-2, 1 BB), Amanda Bicknell (0-1), Taylor Beardslee (0-1), and Erika Holst (0-1) had appearances.
Abbott-O-Rabbit scored first (top of the second) and last (top of the seventh) but in between it was all Juneau.
Harp singled in the bottom of the second but was picked off base. Hultberg singled, Johnson singled and Echiverri reached on an error scoring Hultberg.
In the third inning Harris reached on an error and scored on a Maiquis sacrifice. Bates doubled and Harp homered for a 4-1 advantage.
In the fourth Echiverri singled and scored on a AOR error at home plate. Harris homered for a 6-1 lead.
In the sixth inning Harris reached on a dropped third strike, Maiquis reached on an error and Bates doubled to score Harris. Harp singled to score Maiquis for the final Juneau run. After a leadoff double by AOR’s Kleven and a passed ball, Valdez singled her in for the 8-2 score. Juneau’s Bates got AOR bats to ground out to Good, fly out to Good, and strike out to end the game.
The two teams play again today in game two at 7 p.m. at Nunaka Valley.
