GCLL Junior Baseball All-Stars fall 10-1 to end season

Third straight loss to Abbott-O-Rabbit in state series

Juneau's Gastineau Channel Little League Juniors baseball All-Stars fell 10-1 to Anchorage's Abbott-O-Rabbit on Thursday night in the State Championship best-of-five series at Sitka.

The loss was the third straight to AOR, ending Juneau's season and hopes for the Western Regional Tournament. AOR, winners 6-3 on Tuesday and 7-0 on Wednesday, will move on to Vancouver, Washington, July 31-August 7.

"We beat two tough Southeastern teams in Ketchikan and Sitka to get here," Juneau manager Joe Tompkins said. "Eight of our kids are just 13 years old. They will be back next year in this same tourney. The coaches are really proud of this team."

Juneau struck first in the opening at bat. Donavin McCurley (1-2, 1 BB) singled to get the Juneau dugout excited. McCurley would be picked off at first base but Antonio DeAsis (1-2, 1 BB, 1 RS) earned a walk and stole around to the opposite corner, scoring on an error by the catcher.

Abbott-O-Rabbit tied the score in the bottom as J. Johnson (1-2, 1 RBI, 2 RS) walked and scored on a J. Fazzini (3-4, 2 RBI, 1 RS) singled to left.

Juneau stranded Erik Kelly (1-2) and Sammy McKnight (0-1, 1 BB) in the second inning, McCurley in the third, Trevar Fiscus (0-1) in the fourth, Jacob Dale (0-2 1 BB) in the fifth, and DeAsis and Luke Mallinger (1-1) in the sixth. Michael Cesar (1-3), Quin Gist (0-3), Corbin Neville (0-1), Christian Schenker (0-1), and Elliot Gifford (0-1) all had plate appearances.

"We just couldn't get a rally going," Tompkins said. "And when we did AOR would make great plays. They are a good representative for Alaska."

AOR scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning R. Lincoln (4-5, 1 RBI, 1 RS) singled, Johnson doubled him home, Fazzini tripled Johnson in, and C. Frenchik (2-4, 1 RBI, 1 RS) doubled Fazzini home. Frenchik scored on a double, C. Leslie (0-2, 2 BB, 1 RS) walked and Costello (3-4, 3 RBI, 1 RS) singled him in.

AOR added three runs in the fifth as Maldonado singled, advanced on a passed ball, stole third and scored on Costello's double. J. Homza (1-4, 1 RS) singled and Lincoln singled in Costello. Homza and Lincoln would score in the inning.

AOR scored their last run in the sixth inning as K. Lake (1-4, 1 RS) singled and scored on Costello's single.

Juneau's last three batters were struck out by AOR pitchers. Maldonado got the first and Fazzini who threw 10 pitches with six strikes, got the last two.

Costello got the win, throwing 78 pitches, 41 for strikes, and striking out four, walking four, and allowing one run on two hits. Maldonado relieved (20-13, 2 K, 3 H) and Fazzini closed.

Juneau's McCurley started on the mound, going two innings (56-31, 1 K, 2 BB, 5 R, 5 ER, 6 H); Cesar relieved for 2.1 innings (56-29, 2 K, 1 BB, 4 R, 7 H) and Steven Cole finished with 1.2 innings of work (25-14, 1 K, 1 R, 3 H).

"We received a lot of compliments here," Tompkins said. "The umpiring crew said we had a great group. Win or lose our boys gave a hundred percent and we are really proud of them."
