A walk-off single in extra innings ended the Gastineau Channel Little League’s Junior Softball All-Stars season just one game shy of the championship game of the Western Regional Tournament in Tucson, Arizona on Wednesday.

Northern California leadoff batter Maria Sandoval was hit-by-a-pitch in the eighth inning, advanced on two singles and scored on another to end the game.

Erica Maiquis started on the mound for Juneau, throwing 83 pitches with 51 strikes over four innings, allowing four runs on five hits, and striking out three batters while walking four.

Quincy Bates relieved and went the final innings, throwing 48 pitches with 36 strikes, allowing two runs on five hits and walking one.

California’s Briannalee Moreno threw 87 pitches over four innings, 52 for strikes, and allowed two runs, one hit, struck out four and walked five. Liezl Clark relieved for four innings, throwing 71 pitches with 45 strikes, allowing three runs on seven hits, striking out two and walking one.

Juneau scored two runs in the top of the first inning as Jordan Harris, Makayla Harp and Quincy Bates earned walks to load the bases. Sami Good singled to left field scoring Harris and Sophie Hultberg walked to score Harp.

California came right back in the bottom half with four runs. That 4-2 advantage would hold until the top of the fifth when Juneau’s Maiquis walked and scored on a Harp single to center field.

Juneau took a one run lead in the top of the seventh. Maiquis singled, Harris singled and Bates tripled to score Maiquis but Harris was out at home. Good reached on an error that scored Bates, giving Juneau a 5-4 lead and a chance to end the game from the defensive side.

Bates got the lead batter in the bottom of the seventh to ground out to shortstop Maiquis. With one away, California’s Villanueva tripled to right field and scored on a double by Del Real to tie the game. A double play from Good to Harp and Echiverri ended the inning.

Juneau’s Maddie Johnson led off the eight with a single but was stranded on base. The Gastineau girls then had Sandoval reach after being struck by a pitch and three sharp hits by Stephanie Amstutz, Julia Rodriquez-Vela and Moreno get out of the infield and end their season.
