The Juneau Soccer Clubs Girls 01 team XtraTuffs (mostly 7th graders) fought hard but were outmatched in this year’s Alaska State Cup soccer tournament in Anchorage. The team was shut out in its three scheduled games but broke out in a losing effort, scoring three goals in an arranged consolation game with Cook Inlet Soccer Club’s Velocity Blue. Cook Inlet won the game 5-3.
Mahlia Miller scored the XtraTuffs’ first goal of the tourney and tied the game at 1-1. She won a ball in the corner, caught the goalie off her line, and chipped it over her and into the goal. Velocity went up 3-1 before Jesse Mayer answered with a long shot that bounded over the goalie’s head. Michaela Bentley scored the final goal on a penalty kick.
The Eclipse Soccer Club of Fairbanks beat the team in its first game 6-0. Eclipse controlled the action most of the game. XtraTuffs goalkeeper Karino Ireno turned back an Eclipse penalty kick in the second half.
In their next game, the girls fell behind in the first half but held Cook Inlet Soccer Club’s Velocity Blue team scoreless the rest of the way. The XtraTuffs had several shots on goal in the second half but could not find the back of the net. They lost by a final score of 2-0.
In their final scheduled game, the XtraTuffs were outscored 4-0 in the first half but had a good showing overall against the strongest opponent they faced. They mounted several attacks in the second half that ended with shots going wide or being turned back by the Chugiak goalkeeper. Brianna Jokerst had an exciting breakaway that was barely foiled by the goalkeeper who came far out of her box to make the play.
