Photo: A Herd Of Zebras? A Pride Of Officials? A Flag Of Referees?

Football officials (left-to-right) Karen Lawfer, Bob Thompson, Bob Sims, Jason Boyle and Nathan Bartee work the Thunder Mountain game against Soldotna last weekend at TMHS Field. Always in the spotlight referees, officials and umpires are the first to be blamed and the last to be thanked in sporting events. Without their dedication, local sports would be at a loss. Local officials are trying to recruit more bodies for the high school ranks as numbers have been down the past two years. A basketball officials meeting will begin every Tuesday starting October 1 (Oct. 8, 15, 22, 29, and Nov. 5) from 6-8 p.m. in room C105 at Thunder Mountain High School. A discussion of rules & mechanics as preparation for the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) certification exam. Interested referees for Ordway Rec League are encouraged to attend as well. For more information contact Joel Osburn at 209-7897 (evenings) or Ron Taug at 723-5370 (days). Don't be a drag, throw a flag (or blow a whistle).
