Crimson Bears senior Emma Good and junior Jasper MacNaughton won the Lower Mixed Doubles title and George Crowder and Anne Kinchelo the adult Upper Mixed title at last weekend’s ninth annual Back-To-School Tournament Fundraiser.
The Juneau-Douglas High School tennis team put its 40 members into competition in the event, one of the team’s primary fundraisers.
The tournament is hosted by the Crimson Bears and The Alaska Club and provides competition for team members and community players.
“The tournament is one of the only chances we get to play outside our team competition,” JDHS coach Amy Skilbred said. “It is good for our kids and good for the adult players to get a chance for more play and to socialize.”
Good, looking to secure her third straight state high school tournament championship appearance, teamed with MacNaughton to defeat juniors Sam Bibb and Bailey Davenport 6-1, 6-1 in the finals.
Bibb and Davenport beat freshman Sami Good and sophomore Jon Scudder in a close three-set match in an earlier semifinal.
The Junior Beginners Division included 16 new team tennis players, who paired up to form eight doubles.
Freshmen Gabby Hebert and Cahal Morehouse defeated classmates Logan Mosher and Sara Lee for the JBD title.
The Junior Intermediate Division featured 13 team members participating in a round robin format, which included players switching partners to provide matches for all. No overall winning team was acknowledged.
The Women’s Doubles round robin included team members and adult Alaska Club members. Susan Haymes and Terri Lauterback won the title with two wins and one loss.
Three teams were tied for first place after the round robin portion, each having beaten one of the other teams. The winner was decided by the percentage of the most sets won divided by the total sets they played during the tournament. Haymes and Lauterback had a 71.4 percent win ratio.
Other winners included:
Men’s Lower - Jim Bowman and Art Dee defeated Clark Gruening and Stan Lujan 6-2, 6-2
Men’s Upper - Vini Lata and Mark Poplis defeated Phil McMurray and Dave Otteson 6-0, 6-2
Mixed Upper - George Crowder and Anne Kincheloe defeated Mark Standly and Mona Yarnall 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
Coach Skilbred said the JDHS tennis team relies on the fundraising tournament.
“Without The Alaska Club and their sponsorship, it would be really difficult for the team to have any season at all,” she said.
Next up for JDHS is the Region V tournament on Sept. 25-29, again hosted by The Alaska Club. The tournament will decide the team’s state representatives for the region as no other Southeast high school has a competing tennis team.
JDHS finished third as at team at last season’s state tennis championships in Anchorage, matching their best finish ever.
JDHS also placed third in 2007 and 2008, was fifth in 2009, and seventh in 2010 and 2011.
