Rainy days could not stop the few mountain bike racers in the area as the Tour of Eaglecrest came to a conclusion on Saturday with a daunting hill climb up the snowless trails of the namesake race’s slopes and a two-mile criterium stage.
Taylor Horne brought home the overall first place trophy with a combined three-stage time of 52 minutes and 35 seconds. Ken Whilhelm was second overall in 54:34 and Mark “Kidd” Neidhold third with 60:38.
Friday’s time trial stage from the bridge crossing Fish Creek up to the Lower Loop XC trail featured just three riders. Horne won the stage in 12:50, Wilhelm was second with 12:53 and Neidhold had 14:31.
Race directors stated the three riders came out of the mist, “Like Mel Gibson in Braveheart.”
Saturday’s stage two hill climb from Tiger Hollow to the top of Ptarmigan lift had Horne first with 32:39, Wilhelm second in 34:43, Neidhold third at 38:15 and Odin Brudie had to pull out with a broken chain half way up the hill.
Saturday’s stage three criterium of two-miles over eight laps around the upper and lower parking lots had Wilhelm streak to a 7:06 finish a split second a head of Horne. Brudie was third in 7:49 and Neidhold fourth with 7:52.
