Crimson Bears spikers net marathon match over Falcons

The Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball team is still perfect in Southeast Conference play and the Thunder Mountain Falcons know they let one get away on Tuesday night at the TMHS gym.

“We are just baffled right now,” TMHS junior outside hitter Claire White said. “We gave it our all tonight and we will just have to battle harder next time.”

The Crimson Bears win swung on the momentum of a final 34-32 marathon game. JDHS won game one 25-19, TMHS had game two 25-21, and the Crimson Bears game three 25-17.

White led the Falcons (4-1 Southeast) with eight kills, five tip scores, one block and one service ace.

The Crimson Bears trailed 10-1 in the final game as Falcons junior Lauren Rabago served a string with kills by sophomore Sheridan Cook and senior Jenna Luhrs. The lead ballooned to 17-2 before JDHS sophomore Maddie McKeown killed two straight and senior Kymber Kelly one.

Junior Cora Bontrager served the Crimson Bears within five points at 20-15.

“I am really proud our girls did not give up,” JDHS coach Lesslie Knight said. “They kept fighting back. I thought we were sunk and they just hung in there.”

The game would be tied at 22 all and then 10 more times until McKeown killed the final two Crimson Bears points.

“Give it to Thunder Mountain,” Knight said. “They were very scrappy there at the end and they took us out of our game.”

McKeown led the Crimson Bears with 15 kills, three blocks, and two tip shots; senior Gracie Meiners 10 kills, four tips; senior Makayla Pierce seven kills, five blocks; senior Kaitlin Fagerstrom three kills, two tips; Kelly two kills, two tips; and Bontrager 34 assists.

“I just keep telling everyone to keep it up,” Meiners said. “It was a really good game. They are a really good team. It was fun tonight.”

Luhrs added six kills, five blocks, three aces and one tip for the Falcons; sophomore Sheridan Cook three kills, two blocks; sophomore Ava Tompkins five blocks, two kills; and junior Danielle Steinman one kill and one block.

This weekend the Crimson Bears travel to Anchorage and the Falcons do not play.
