Juneau-Douglas High School juniors Nathan Klein and Jacob Thibodeau have been selected to Team Alaska’s 2014 Arctic Winter Games Table Tennis Team for the March 15-22 competition in Fairbanks. The duo tried out for the team in a tournament in Anchorage last weekend. Four boys and four girls will represent Alaska in the table tennis singles, doubles, and mixed doubles competition at the AWG.
Juneau athletes can still try out for various AWG sports. Information is available at www.teamalaska.org. Team Alaska athletes must be between the ages of 11-18. The bi-annual AWG international circumpolar competition features over 2000 athletes and their coaches from Alaska, Alberta North, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik Quebec, Greenland, Sapmi, Yamal and Yukon. The games require 2,500 volunteers and over 3,000 fans attend.
Arctic Winter Games sports include Alpine Skiing, Arctic Sports, Badminton, Basketball, Biathlon-Ski, Biathlon-Snowshoe, Cross Country Skiing, Cultural, Curling, Dene Games, Dog Mushing, Figure Skating, Gymnastic, Hockey, Indoor Soccer, Snowboarding, Snowshoeing, Speed Skating, Table Tennis, Volleyball and Wrestling. Arctic Sports events include the One-Foot High Kick, Two-Foot High Kick, Alaskan High Kick, Kneel Jump, Airplane, One Hand Reach, Head Pull, Arm Pull, Knuckle Hop, Sledge Jump, Triple Jump, and the All Around (top score of 7 or 3 events). Dene Games events include Finger Pull, Hand Games, Snow Snake, Stick Pull, Pole Push and All Around (top score any 3 individual events).
The next sport tryout is volleyball. Interested players have until Oct. 31 to fill out an application and the tryout session is slated for Nov. 17 in Anchorage from 6-8 p.m. Players should contact Gary Ray at email@example.com. The Cultural competition involves a minimum of three artists/performers to a maximum of six. The team will participate in cultural exchange, daily performances and gala concerts and will share their talents, gifts and abilities with the community and other AWG participants.
