The Juneau Lions Club voted on Monday to readmit the women’s bracket to the annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament. The size of the bracket and how it will affect the other divisions, however, is still to be decided.
JLC vice presidents and tournament co-chairs Louise Kadinger, Geny Del Rosario and Greg Inderland, along with club members Steve Brandner, Joyce Kitka and Sasha Soboleff presented a positive recommendation at the clubs luncheon.
Due to the heated conversations among the club and surrounding communities on the topic the JLC decided to forgo the verbal voting process of Roberts Rules of Order and the 14 attending JLC members in good standing voted by ballot.
The ‘Committee Of Six’ will meet again today, along with Sealaska Heritage Institute’s Carmaleeda Estrada, whose proposal was instrumental in the process, to determine just how the Gold Medal Tournament brackets will be decided.
It had been originally thought that the B bracket would be lowered back to eight teams and the Masters to four, leaving the C bracket at six and the Women with six for an allowable 24 entrants. Discussions than toyed with making the C bracket eight teams and the Women four.
A press release is expected before next week stating the bracket sizes and requesting women’s teams to submit applications for this year’s GMT and extending the men’s applications to the same deadline.
