The Floyd Dryden Middle School boys ‘A’ basketball team won the annual Schoenbar Shootout in Ketchikan over the weekend.

The tournament included multiple divisions in boys and girls brackets with teams from Schoenbar Middle School, Blatchley (Sitka), Floyd Dryden (Juneau), Metlakatla, Craig, Hydaburg, and Klawock.

“The tournament was extremely well run by Kelly Smith and the staff and volunteers of Schoenbar Middle School,” FDMS coach Robert Casperson said. “We are very thankful to have had the opportunity to travel down there and play in such an electric atmosphere. Our kids will not soon forget the experience they had or friends they made from across the region.”

The Eagles lost their round robin opener to Schoenbar 53-47. FD held the lead most of the first half, but the Knights came storming back to take the lead and extend it, at one point leading by 15 late in the second half, before FD cut the lead to the final margin.

The Eagles won a close 50-48 contest over Metlakatla in the semifinal. The game was tight all the way through with both teams jockeying for the lead. The pro-Metlakatla crowd was in full force trying to cheer their team to victory, but in the end FD prevailed as a last second 30 foot 3-point attempt caromed off the rim securing the win for FD.

The Eagles then romped over Schoenbar in the championship game, winning 48-33. The rematch of the round robin game featured an early lead by FD once again, but this time they held on throughout the contest. FD extended their lead in the second half by executing their full court pressure for steals and layups to earn the championship trophy.

Floyd Dryden players selected to the all-tourney team were Kasey Watts and Erik Kelly.
