Dzantik'i Heeni's Addie Prussing (2) dribbles away from the defense of Floyd Dryden's Erica Hurtte (2) during recent middle school basketball action at FDMS.

The annual Icebreaker middle school basketball tournament begins today.

This means the B and C teams from Floyd Dryden will get to compete against their peers and the B and C teams from Dzantik’i Heeni will be filled with their intramural program?

Excuse me if I am a little confused.

I just received the schedule a few hours before I have to put it in the paper and I am light headed.

I must have low blood sugar as a result of diligent deciphering of the codes for fans that may possibly want to attend and watch A, B and C blood types mingle in a display of artistic hoopery.

The schedule says we have B teams playing at Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School (DHMS) and A teams playing at Floyd Dryden (FD).

No mention of C teams on the tournament schedules.

I have heard C players have been incorporated into the B teams, B players into A teams, B and C players into A-Coed teams, and some players from ABC teams were fed up and quit.

FD has a BBBA (boys basketball A team) and a BBBB (following me?), as well as GBBA and GBBB teams.

The across town DHMSBBBA, DHMSBBBB, DHMSGBBA, and DHMSGBBB teams are ready to roll as well.

I have not seen or heard of any BBBC or GBBC squads, from either DHMS or FD.

OMG! I am OD’d on initials!

All we really need to know is that a lot of great basketball by youth who love basketball is about to be played at Dzantik’i Heeni and Floyd Dryden middle schools today through Saturday.

Ketchikan’s Schoenbar Middle School and Sitka’s Blatchley Middle School have A and B boys and girls teams.

Haines and Skagway will have boys and girls B teams in the fray.

Here is the B action at DHMS today:

11 a.m., Girls B - DHMS vs. Schoenbar / Boys B - Schoenbar vs. Haines.

12:15 p.m., Girls B - FD vs. Skagway / Boys B - DHMS vs. Sitka.

1:30 p.m., Girls B - Haines vs. Schoenbar / Boys B - FD vs. Skagway.

2:45 p.m., Girls B - DHMS vs. Skagway / Boys B - Schoenbar vs. Sitka.

4 p.m., Girls B - FD vs. Schoenbar / Boys B - Haines vs. Skagway.

5:15 p.m., Girls B - Skagway vs. Haines / Boys B - DHMS vs. FD.

6:30 p.m., Girls B - DHMS vs. FD / Boys B - Skagway vs. Sitka.

7:45 p.m., Boys B - DHMS vs. Schoenbar / Boys B - Haines vs. FD.

Here is the A action at FD today:

10:30 a.m., Girls A - FD vs. Schoenbar.

11:45 a.m., Boys A - FD vs. Schoenbar.

1 p.m., Boys A - DHMS vs. Sitka.

2:15 p.m., Girls A - FD vs. DHMS.

3:30 p.m., Boys A - DHMS vs. FD.

4:45 p.m., Boys A - Sitka vs. Schoenbar.

Oh, keep your eye on Schoenbar. In their own Shootout tournament at the end of November, Schoenbar had four teams in the field of 25. All four made the championship game and three of those Knights’ squads were crowned champions. The Schoenbar girls A and B teams and the boys B won titles. The Knights’ boys A team finished second to Floyd Dryden 48-33, thanks to the Eagles’ Erik Kelly scoring 17 points, Kasey Watts and Brayden Pollow notching 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Knights’ A girls beat Sitka 29-25 for the title, getting a game-high 13 points from Brittany Slick, including a free throw with four seconds remaining to ice the win.

The Knights’ B boys topped FD 44-41 for their crown behind Cody Kemble’s 17 points. Hansel Hinkle led the Eagles with 18 points.

The Knights’ B girls topped Craig 35-32 for the title behind 11 points from Melea Greaves.

So there are a lot of teams and players in town to watch and take notes on. Probably a few names I could just abbreviate, you know, to make my life easier.

If you see me hunched over on the side of the court remember this:

My blood type is AB positive.

Wait... or is it negative... or is it A or B positive/negative?… or O?

Tell you what; if I have a smile on my face just leave me be.

As long as youth are playing that is a positive.
