The first annual Savannah Cayce Southeast Championships were held this weekend at the Dimond Park Aquatic Center. Previously called the SE Champs, they are now named in honor of former Glacier Swim Club and Juneau-Douglas High School swimmer Savannah Cayce when the meets are held in Juneau according to local swim authorities. Cayce died in June of 2012 in an accident on Auke Lake. This weekend’s meet also marked the retirement of volunteer Sandy O’Brien after 15 years of doing just about everything possible to ensure swim meets in Juneau ran smoothly.
“After 15 years it was time,” O’Brien said. “It is still enjoyable but it is time.”
O’Brien thanked fans for attending and stated it had been great to be part of Southeast swimming for so many years and applauded the many who make the Glacier Swim Club such an amazing program.
Results of the championships will run at a later date.
