Campos earns All-State football honor

Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears senior Demetrius Campos scores against the Soldotna Stars in the ASAA medium school state championship game on Oct. 26. Campos was selected to the ASBN All-State Team this weekend.

Juneau-Douglas High School senior Demetrius Campos was selected to the Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network’s 2013 All-State football team last week.

Campos was the only Southeast selection and just one of two medium school players’ chosen. Soldotna High School quarterback Colton Young was the other. The two had been up for player of the year honors earlier.

“I am glad to see him get some recognition,” JDHS coach Rich Sjoroos said. “He definitely was the catalyst for us this year. He embraced that role too, which was great to see.”

Campos was largely responsible for the Crimson Bears run to the First National Bowl Alaska School Activities Association Medium School State Championship game in their first season dropping down from the large school division. JDHS lost the high scoring title affair to Soldotna 56-49 despite Campos totaling 217 yards and three touchdowns.

Campos’ season numbers included 111 rushing attempts for 1118 yards and 16 touchdowns, for an average carry of 10.1 yards, virtually guaranteeing a first down whenever he took the ball. The 10.1 yards per carry is a new JDHS record, breaking the 8.6 set by Tres Saldivar in 2005.

Campos also finished with a new JDHS school record of 23 total touchdowns, breaking the 22 set by Brian Felix in 2003.

“There was a lot of pressure put on him when he was younger to play like a super senior, even back when he was a sophomore,” Sjoroos said. “That is a tough load for any kid to carry. To see him step up and bring it on this season was great, especially down the playoff stretch. I think he would have carried the ball every time if we would have let him.”

JDHS girls sweep 3A Sitka

Early in the third quarter and leading by seven points, Kendyl Carson and Caitlin Pusich traded 3-point attempts, each missing two in a row on an extended Crimson Bears possession. It was that kind of night for the Juneau-Douglas High School girls basketball team. Fortunately, visiting Sitka also shot poorly, and JDHS escaped Friday with a 41-31 win.
