The Curtis High School (Wash.) Vikings took the opening tip all the way to the basket and finished unbeaten in the 2013 Princess Cruises Capital City Classic with a 35-18 win over the Lathrop Lady Malemutes on Monday in Juneau.
A low-scoring defensive battle produced just a 6-5 Vikings advantage in the first quarter as their full-court defense forced four Lathrop turnovers and just three fouls between the two teams.
Curtis upped the tempo in the second quarter, forcing six more Lathrop turnovers. The Vikings’ Sierra Dean hit her second 3-pointer of the contest and Cedrice Howard scored twice inside to push the lead. The Lady Malemutes did not find the basket until 18 seconds remained before halftime and trailed 15-7.
Dean led off the next period with a triple and the Vikings forced six turnovers and held the Lady Malemutes scoreless in the quarter for a 27-7 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Lathrop had the better fourth quarter, outscoring Curtis 11-8.
Dean led the Vikings with nine points and four assists, AD Bradley added seven points, Cedrice Howard, Murielrose Shipp and Kaelin Williams-Kennedy four each, Quashaya Hammon three and Bailey Richardson and Anna Metz two apiece. Peightyn Perrien had five steals and along with Hailey Marsh and Gretchen Stolte had significant court time.
The Lady Malemutes were led by Alexis Shipman’s eight points, Makenzie Warner added four, Rachel Jordan three, Alaynna Flanders two and Jada Meadows one. Kimi Duffield, Karli Fitzgerald, Dianna Wilson and Lizzie Meadows (4 rebounds) all played.
