The Juneau-Douglas High School hockey team fell 8-1 in their opening game of a weekend series against the West Valley Wolf Pack on Friday night at Treadwell Arena.
The Crimson Bears got on the board first at the 12:34 mark of the first period with a goal by senior Ethan Seid assisted by classmate Zach Easton. West Valley’s Caleb Moretz tallied at the 5:28 mark with assists from Casey Lewandowski and John Dixon to pull even.
In the second period JDHS junior Cole Chessman and senior Josh Lahnum were sent to the box for cross checking penalties and the Wolf Pack took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to score four goals and break the game open.
Logan Arpino hit at the 11:47 mark (Stoshie Skorupski, Ethan Daniels); Gabe Rankin at 10:18 (Calvon Boots, Arpino); 9:03- Wyatt Dupont at 9:03 (Taylor Geil, Ty Proffitt); and Stoshie Skorupski at 8:12 (Rankin, Daniels)
“We have to find a way to play 3rd solid periods against a team like,” JDHS coach Luke Adams said. “We can’t give a team with that much skill that many easy chances to score, I do believe that if we didn't give them those opportunities and made some better choices the game would have gone differently.”
West Valley added 3 more goals in the final period to make the score 8-1
3rd period goals- 13:43- Gabe Rankin hit at 13:43 (Skorupski), Rankin at 8:56 (Skorupski, Daniels), and Moretz at 8:18 (Lewandowski)
The Crimson Bears goalies faced 48 shots on the night, with Neil Chapman stopping 32 of 38 and Liam McDermott denying 7 of 10.
JDHS’ Ethan Seid was awarded the 3rd star of the game, West Valley’s Stoshie Skorupski 2nd and Ethan Daniels the 1st.
