ANCHORAGE — Just days after suffering a concussion, Eureka musher Brent Sass has withdrawn from the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Four mushers have scratched, leaving 70 in the race, according to the race’s website.
The Anchorage Daily News reports the 34-year-old Sass was in second place in the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race when he was injured Feb. 8. Sass fell off his sled and cracked his head on the ice about 100 miles from the race finish.
The Iditarod will start March 1 with a ceremonial run in Anchorage. Race organizers are expected to announce Monday whether the restart will be held the following day in Willow or if poor trail conditions will force the restart to Fairbanks on March 3.
