The Mt. Edgecumbe High School boys basketball team outscored the Petersburg Vikings 16-6 in the fourth quarter of their Region V tournament opening game Wednesday, breaking open a nine-point contest to take a 51-29 win.

“We were aggressive defensively in the half court,” Mt. Edgecumbe coach Archie Young said. “Our half court was huge. I thought we took care of the ball in our offensive sets and that made Petersburg really work.”

The two teams put on a shooting display in the first quarter as Vikings senior Michael Brock connected past the arch twice and classmate Jared Volk once while the Braves found the time zone from sophomore Jaloni Pepper and junior Skye Shipton, and senior Donald Edenshaw controlled the inside with two baskets and three rebounds.

“I just try to bring leadership to the team,” Edenshaw said. “Show them how coach likes us to play. I like to play physical, just box out and rebound.”

Pepper hit a layup to give the Braves a 14-10 advantage with just under two minutes remaining in the stanza, and Brock’s triple kept the Vikings close at 14-13.

“He is deceptively quick because of his length,” Young said of Pepper. “He is a fairly smooth offensive player, but as young as he is he has a lot to learn with and the potential to become a good player if he wants to be.”

Foul troubles plagued Petersburg in the second stanza as the aggressive Mt. Edgecumbe team attacked the basket and was awarded with a 6-8 showing at the charity stripe. That helped them open a 25-18 halftime advantage.

The Braves also did a better job of getting out to shooters defensively and limiting the Vikings’ open looks at the basket.

Mt. Edgecumbe’s Edenshaw continued to control the boards and the Braves outscored Petersburg 10-5 in the third quarter for a 35-23 lead with eight minutes to play.

The Vikings were forced to pressure the Braves full court in the fourth quarter and Mt. Edgecumbe responded with eight free throws in the stanza while Petersburg hit just 4 of 8.

The Vikings tallied just six points in the final period.

Jaloni Pepper led the Braves with 17 points, Skye Shipton added 16, Donald Edenshaw 10, Paul Kewan 6, and Ermogen Mercuelif 2.

The Braves hit 16-24 from the charity stripe; the Vikings were 8-18.

Michael Brock led Petersburg with 8 points, Kayin McCay 7, Jesse Lantiegne 6, Jared Volk 3, Tristan Welton 2, Colby Bell, Connor Yeager and Alan Jensen 1 each.

Mt. Edgecumbe advances to today’s 1:15 p.m. game against top-seed Sitka.

The Vikings play in an elimination game at 9:45 a.m. Friday against the Mt. Edgecumbe/Sitka loser.
