The Juneau-Douglas High School girl’s soccer team faced their biggest obstacle on the pitch before the 2014 season started.
Senior Bekka Ord, who spent last season in an exchange program overseas, tore her ACL in January at a college showcase event in Portland, Oregon.
Ord, considered to be one of, if not the, best girls soccer player in the state, will miss this season of play but will be a manager for the team. Ord started some contests her freshman season and all of her sophomore year.
JDHS was winless last season (0-1-7 Southeast Conference, 0-1-13 Overall) and missed the state tournament for the first time as Thunder Mountain edged Ketchikan by a half game to earn that trip.
The Crimson Bears will face their first challenge of the season against the Eagle River Wolves tonight at 8 p.m. on the Thunder Mountain High School pitch. The two teams will play again Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at TMHS. Due to icy conditions on JDHS’ Adair Kennedy Field, the Crimson Bears home pitch, all JDHS games this weekend have been moved to TMHS.
Eagle River lost to West 4-1 this year and defeated Bartlett 3-0.
The roster for tonight’s game includes seniors Ord (manager), Jasmine Brown, Kymber Kelly, Eliza Walker, Katie McKeown, Sarah Landen, Ruby Steedle and Adriana Botelho; Juniors Tessa Smith, Katerina Johnson, Cora Bontragger and Bailey Davenport; Sophomores Wenshi Fraser, Meranda Frenzel, Kallen Hoover, Kate Metcalfe, Ruth Roys, Rylee Landen and Maddie McKeown; and freshmen Ally Lindley and Georgia Robinson.
Also on the JDHS soccer team are seniors Cheyenne Siverly, Breanna Helf, Kathryn Noreen, Danielle Erickson, Tori Talley, Rebecca Erickson and Lauren Shanley-Debuse; Junior Jasmin Yadao; Sophomores Briana Sievenpiper, Helen Thurston and Keely Ewing; and freshmen Erika Holst, Hannah Mitchell, Bethany Bibb and Jade McCormick.
Assistant coaches are Joann Quigg and Phil Subeldia.
Also on the pitch this weekend the Thunder Mountain boys play Eagle River at 6:15 p.m. tonight at TMHS and Saturday at 6:15 p.m. at TMHS. The JDHS boys play Eagle River at 10 a.m. Saturday at TMHS. All games orginally scheduled for Adair Kennedy Field have been moved to Thunder Mountain due to icy field conditions.
The Eagle River boys have tied West 1-1 and fell to Bartlett 5-1.
