The Juneau-Douglas High School baseball team went head-to-head with Sitka’s top ace on Friday and the Crimson Bears were up for the challenge, taking a second inning lead and never giving it back as junior Nathan Klein held his own on the mound.
JDHS lighted the scoreboard as senior Jacob Thibodeau singled, Bryce Swofford singled and Sitka’s Brain Way hit two batters to score Thibodeau. Alex Muir sacrificed in Swofford for the 2-0 lead.
Sitka got a run back in the top of the third inning as Ky Stockel hit a lead off single and scored on a single by Erickson Fish.
The Crimson Bears came back in their half of the inning as Kellen Johansen was hit by a pitch and stole second base after a fly ball out at center. A single by Jack Withington put Johansen on the corner and he scored on Thibodeau’s single. A single by Swofford scored Thibodeau for the 4-1 advantage.
Sitka found 2 runs in the top of the fifth but JDHS put up another 4 in their half.
Swofford singled to reach base. Two batters went down and Jasper MacNaugton bunted and Muir singled in Swofford. Grant Ainsworth, Johansen and Klein singled in 3 runs for the 9-3 lead and added another run in the bottom of the sixth.
Klein went the distance, striking out six Wolves, walking 2 and giving up 2 earned runs on 7 hits.
Klein also went 2-4 with 3 RBIs. Alex Muir was 1-2 with 2 RBIs and Swofford 3-4 with 1 RBI, and Thibodeau 2-4 with an RBI.
On Saturday the Crimson Bears played back-to-back games against Sitka and Thunder Mountain, topping the Wolves 5-4 and the Falcons 8-4.
Against Sitka, Jacob Thibodeau pitched a complete game 5-4 win with 4 ER and one strikeout. Kyle Fittzimmons pitched a complete game for Sitka. Nathan Klein had a 2nd inning solo home run. The game was tied at 4 in the seventh inning. With Grant Ainsworth on third, Kellen Johansen hit a sharp grounder to the Wolves Brian Way who throws home in the dirt, and Ainsworth scores the winning run.

In the nightcap game, Jack Withington threw five innings and struck out four Falcons in an 8-4 win. JDHS’ Grant Ainsworth threw the final two innings in relief and struck out one batter.
The Falcons pitched RJ Markovich, Jared Markovich and Patrick Millay in the loss.
