The Juneau-Douglas High School girls softball team went 1 of 3 on their recent Anchorage road trip, falling on Friday to defending state champion East 14-2 and to Lathrop 14-4. On Saturday, JDHS split with West, winning 11-8 and falling 11-9.
East lead 8-0 in the fourth inning before JDHS scored.
Freshman Sophie Hultberg walked, freshman Erica Maiquis singled to right field and senior Randi Held singled to load the bases. Junior Rachelle Roldan singled to score Hultberg and Held scored on an error with Maiquis out at third base. The Thunderbirds scored 5 runs in the top of the fifth and closed out the Crimson Bears bats.
Savanna Schauwecker threw 4 innings (8 hits, 8 runs, 4 earned runs, 5 walks, 3 strikeouts). Maiquis threw 1 (5 H, 6 R, 4 ER 1 BB, 1 K).
JDHS found trailed 2-0 against Lathrop before scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Kaitlin Fagerstrom bunted for a single, senior Andrea Gordon reached on an error, senior Gracie Meiners reached on a fielders choice that retired Gordon, and senior Emma Good singled to right field to score Fagerstrom. Meiners scored in the action and Hultberg grounded out but scored Emma Good on the play.
The Malemutes regained the lead in the top of the third for a 9-3 edge. JDHS scored their final run in the lower half as Good singled, advanced on a Hultberg ground out and a Maiquis singled and scored on field action. Lathrop put up their 14th point in the fifth inning and held off the Crimson Bears.
Maiquis threw 5 (11 H, 14 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 2 HR). E. Good went 2-3 (2 R, 2 RBI), Maiquis 2-2 (1 RBI), Fagerstrom 1-2 (1 R), Meiners 0-3 (1 R).
In Saturday’s win over West the JDHS girls scored 1 run in the top of the first inning as Gordon singled and scored on a Schauwecker single. West scored twice in their half and three more in the second.
JDHS scored in the top of the third as Gordon singled, stole a base and scored on a double by Meiners.
JDHS tied the game in the top of the fourth as Good reached on an error, Hultberg walked, Maiquis reached on a fielders choice that put out Good and Held singled in Hultberg. Fagerstrom singled in Maiquis and Gordon singled in Held.
JDHS went on top 11-5 in the fifth as Schauwecker walked, Good singled, Hultberg scarified, and Held singled to score Schauwecker. Roldan singled to score Good and Fagerstrom bunted to score held. Gordon singled to center and Roldan and Fagerstrom scored on fielding errors. Meiners singled and Gordon scored on a passed ball.
West scored 2 runs in the fifth and 1 in the sixth. Maiquis threw 6 (12 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 2 HR). Gordon went 4-4 (3 R, 1 RBI), Held 2-4 (2 R, 2 RBI, 2 K), Fagerstrom 2-4 (1 R, 2 RBI), Meiners 2-4 (1 RBI), Schauwecker 1-3 (1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K), Roldan 1-4 (1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K), Emma Good 1-3 (1 R), Hultberg 0-1 (1 R, 2 BB, 1 K), Bicknell 0-1.
In Saturday’s 11-9 loss to West, the Eagles plated 7 runs in the top of the first. JDHS rallied for 3 runs as Fagerstrom singled, Gordon singled and Meiners reached on a fielder’s choice that put out Fagerstrom. Emma Good singled and Gordon and Meiners advanced and scored on field action. Sami Good singled to score Emma Good.
JDHS scored in the second as Held reached on an error, advanced on outs by Roldan and Fagerstrom and scored on a passed ball.
JDHS scored 2 runs in the third as Meiners singled and scored on an Emma Good single. Maiquis singled and Emma Good scored on the action.
West led 11-6 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Roldan scored on a passed ball and Fagerstrom went to third and scored on a fly out by Gordon.
JDHS found their final run in the sixth as Meiners singled and scored on a Schauwecker single. Schauwecker threw 4 innings (10 H, 11 R, 6 ER, 5 BB, 1 K) and Maiquis 2 (2 H, 2 K). Meiners went 3-4 (3 R) and Emma Good went 3-4 (2 R, 3 RBI) to lead plate action.
The Crimson Bears next play at Ketchikan on May 16-17.
