Former JDHS Crimson Bears guard, and current women's professional basketball player, Talisa Rhea demonstrates a drill as campers look on during last year's Juneau Fast Break Basketball Camp at JDHS. This year's camp is open for registration.

The Juneau Fast Break Basketball Camp will feature a variety of experienced coaches and current college athletes as it opens the gym doors for the second year.

“This is an outstanding gathering of instructors that will be able to relate to any age camper,” camp director and Juneau-Douglas coach Robert Casperson said.

Local coaches, staff and guest instructors will provide fundamental basketball instruction appropriate for all ages and ability.

George Houston leads a cast that includes Ben Kriegmont, Guy Tompkins, Steve Potter, Brice Searles, Bob Saviers, Vince Yadao, Jim Carson and Alex Fagerstrom.

Former women’s professional basketball player and JDHS graduate Talisa Rhea returns to the camp as do college athletes (and Juneau graduates) Annette Highley, Olivia Henderson, Alec Calloway, Sarah Tarver, Brittany Fenumiai, Phillip Fenumiai, Tony Yadao, Taylor Swofford, Aquino Brinson and Keith Ainsworth.

“I’m really looking forward to these two weeks of camp,” Casperson said. “They are a lot of fun. I guarantee there will be plenty of sweat and smiles during these camps.”

The goal of the JFBBC is to help campers improve throughout the week, with an emphasis on individual skill development, team play, and execution of basic fundamentals. Campers will learn offensive and defensive skills while gaining valuable opportunities to set and work towards goals, improve physical fitness, and build self-confidence... all through the fun and excitement of the game of basketball.

All boys and girls entering grades 2-12 next school year are eligible to participate. Applicants must have had a physical within the past year. Campers will be divided by age and ability. Camp 1 and Camp 2 will have three levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. A preference should be marked on the registration form. Adjustments to levels can be made throughout the week to maximize the experience of the camper. Teams bringing seven or more players to Camp 2 will be allowed to compete as a team and pay a special tuition rate of $170 per member.

Camp 1 is for those entering grades 2–8 next year. Orientation will be Sunday, June 8th, from 4pm–5pm at the Juneau-Douglas High School main gym. The camp will run from June 9–13, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. All campers will begin at the JDHS gym each day. Coaches will escort some players to Harborview and/or Marie Drake for instruction, as necessary. All Campers will be picked up from the JDHS main gym at the end of each day.

Among the Camp 1 counselors are Adam Empson, Gunnar Schultz, Manase Maake, Romney Tupou, Kaleb Tompkins, Treyson Ramos, Bryce Swofford, Jacob Thibodeau, Nathan Klein, Stewart Conn and Guy Bean.

Camp 2 is for those entering grades 8–12 next year. Orientation will be Sunday, June 15th, from 4 p.m.–5 p.m. at the Juneau-Douglas High School main gym. The camp will run from June 16–20, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. The All-Star games and award ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 21 from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. All campers should attend All-Star Saturday.

Camp 2 guest presentations include Faifo Levale taling about Determination/motivation in the weight room; Talisa Rhea & Brice Searles speaking about Playing at the next level; Richard Radford from Coaching Boys into Men; and Mike Carriker& Vince Yadao from Juneau Youth Services talking about Making good choices.
