Pure Sole: This is not a story

The bullying incidences reported on page one in today’s paper is not a story.

At least, that is what I was told by a local high school coach regarding alleged assaults on our local youth.

Again, it’s not a story worth reporting.

So, Juneau, you don’t need to bother reading any farther. That is, unless you believe in reading non-stories like, oh, I don’t know…

Hitler and the Jews, the Ku Klux Klan and Medgar Evers, rape on college campuses, drunks in schools, bullied youths turning to guns or taking their own life, or both …

Maybe your son has never been beaten.

Maybe your daughter hasn’t been raped.

In that case, the bullying at Juneau’s high schools isn’t the non-story for you.

If you have an eighth grade girl about to go into high school, stop reading.

Do you really need to know that her name could be on a shopping list as one selected to be stripped naked by upper classwomen, left out the road, and then “rescued” by upperclassmen?

Reminder: This is not a story.

If you have a young boy about to enter high school, who may be the target of an upperclassmen star athlete, then stop reading.

Do you really need to know they could be beaten and left naked on a locker room floor? Or kidnapped from a bonfire, house party, or sleep over, trying desperately to call you as they run from a pack of thugs?

Don’t forget, this is not a story. Just sit back and drink your coffee and pretend none of it is happening.

Do you really need to know the correct two-handed or one-handed grip used on a paddle as your youth is held down, derriere exposed, and mercilessly struck by at least six assailants?

Put the paper down, this is soooo not a story. Instead, have a bagel and enjoy your day.

I was bullied once. I had to wear a wig and sing the school fight song.

But carrying a tune and a club are two different things.

Do we need to know that a family is so terrified something will happen to their son that they now allow him to carry a knife?

Sound like a story? Too bad, because it’s not. So let’s make that hole in the sand a bit bigger instead.

Coaches, teachers, administrators, parents and community members… THESE are your players, students, charges, sons and daughters and citizens.

If YOU do not speak up, YOU are letting them down.

YOU are enabling OUR bullies and shunning OUR victims.

But what do I know?

This is not a story.
