Post 25 tops unbeaten Wasilla

Tanner Petrie throws 1-hit shutout in Juneau's 1-0 win
Juneau's Tanner Petrie, shown in American Legion baseball action earlier this season at Adair Kenndy Field against South, threw a 1-hit complete game win for Post 25 against the Wasilla Road Warriors Post 35 in Anchorage on Thursday. Petrie is 3-0 on the season and Juneau shares the American Division lead with Wasilla.

Juneau’s American Legion all-star pitcher Tanner Petrie baffled the league’s top team on Thursday in Anchorage, throwing a 1-hit masterpiece on the mound that pushed Post 25 to a 1-0 win over Wasilla Post 35and a tie atop the standings with that Road Warriors team.

“The pitching performances that I have seen with Juneau kids in the past, this is probably one of the best I have ever seen,” Post 25 manager Andy Macaulay said. “He was pitching extremely well and he and Nathan (Klein), who was catching for him, were on the same page.”

Weather cancelled Wednesday’s games against Palmer and forced the Wasilla contest to be moved to Bartlett High School’s turf field.

Even an act of God didn’t deter Petrie from improving to 3-0 on the season.

Only one ball was hit to the outfield.

Petrie gave up no walks and struck out 11 Wasilla batters.

“He had complete control of his off speed pitches,” Macaulay said. “He was hitting his locations and it was a pitching performance that was very impressive against a very good ball club.”

Wasilla (5-1 conference, 6-1 overall) was atop the Alaska Legion AA American Division but will now share the lead with Juneau (5-1, 7-2). Eagle River (7-2, 7-2) is atop the National Division with Chugiak (6-2, 8-5) right behind. Complete standings follow the story.

“The adrenaline was high,” Macaulay said. “The kids knew that Wasilla was a very good team.”

The 7-inning game only went 90 minutes.

Petrie and Wasilla lefty Nolan Monoghan (6 innings, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K) did not give up much real estate.

Juneau’s run came in the bottom of the third inning as Matt Cunningham singled back to the mound and advanced to second on the throw to first base. Cunningham then advanced to third base on an error by the center fielder in a pick-off attempt.

Kellen Johansen hit an RBI single to left field to bring Cunningham home.

Petrie struck out the Wasilla side in the top of the fourth, struck out two in the top of the third and sixth innings, and struck out one batter in the fifth.

The other outs came from a team that was ready to get their pitcher’s back.

“I could not be prouder to have such a good group of kids,” Macaulay said. “When they give everything they can as a team effort to back up Tanner (Petrie), when he is pitching so well, it is just fun to watch.”

Juneau had two more opportunities to score with runners on third base and less than two outs but could not get home.

In the bottom of the first inning, Tod Baseden singled, stole second base and advanced to third on an error but was stuck their by a fly ball and a strike out.

In the bottom of the second inning, Petrie singled and was replaced by courtesy runner Michael Dale who advanced to third on an error but two groundouts left him stranded.

Petrie was 8-0 last season for Post 25.

“He is doing quite well,” Macaulay said. “He made a major adjustment today from the first two weeks of the season. When he is that good I would put him up against any pitcher in the state.”

Cunningham went 1-2 (1 R, 1 K), Baseden 1-2 (1 BB), Johansen 1-3 (1 RBI), Petrie 1-3, Grant Ainsworth 0-3, Klein 0-3 (2 K), Gus Swanton 0-1 (1 BB), Jacob Thibodeau 0-2, Finn Collins 0-2.

Matt Palmer got the lone hit for Wasilla, a single to left field in the top of the second inning. He advanced to second on ground ball out and to third on a passed ball, but Petrie fielded the third out on the mound and made the put out to Thibodeau at first base.

Rained out games with Palmer and Wasilla will be rescheduled.

Juneau Post 25 will host Ketchikan on Saturday at Adair Kennedy Field at 12:30 p.m. in a 9-inning league game and a 3:30 p.m. non-league game.
